Founder’s Story
Hello there,
I’m Abiola Adebiyi, the Founder of Elevate Development Foundation.
At Elevate, we believe every person’s story is powerful, and that’s why I want to share mine with you.
An Existential Crisis
In 2016, I found myself at a crossroads. Life felt like it was pulling me in different directions, and I needed clarity.
During this time of reflection, I felt a deep, unmistakable leading from God—one that would change the course of my life. I was called to help others, especially those facing hardships that I had never known.
But it wasn’t until I watched a documentary about a community called Makoko in Lagos, Nigeria, that I truly understood what that calling meant. At first, I dismissed the video as just another random suggestion.
But there was something about it—something that lingered. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and deep down, I knew this wasn’t coincidence. God was guiding me, urging me to pay attention.
TAKING ACTION
I felt compelled to take action.
Without delay, I reached out to my parents and shared what I had felt. I couldn’t explain it completely, but I knew I needed to go to Makoko and see for myself. So, I did.
I traveled there, unsure of what exactly I could do, but certain that I had to help in some way. My first conversation with a local leader in Makoko was simple but significant: “I’m a student, and I’m not sure how I can help you, but I know I’m here for a reason.”
And that was it. That was the moment Elevate Development Foundation was born.
